MAYUMI HARYOTO
“I was born 28 years ago. Mother is Japanese and father is Indonesian—just to explain my name. I’m a self-taught illustrator. I graduated highschool early and I only took one year graphic design course at Digital College Studio (now International Design School) in Jakarta. I started working at the age of 18. I changed jobs a lot from a 2D artist in a game developer studio, art director in ad agencies, record labels, assistant producer/director, storyboard artist in film production houses, and few more others until I finally discovered that the world of illustration apparently is more than just comics and video games. I fell in love and it’s almost six years since I decided to dive into it.
I use both traditional and digital techniques with no real preference of medium. I’m greatly inspired by juxtapositions and sublime narratives but more specifically ukiyo-e (Japanese wood block prints), edo period art, and also Indonesia in 1950s, Jakarta/Batavia during Dutch colonial period, music, and colorful Asia.”
